After the mandatory Qur’anic education at a tender age, the Waziri of Katsina, Prof. Sani Abubakar Lugga, was enrolled into the primary school where he continued with Islamic studies alongside “formal” education. He obtained the West African School Certificate (WASC) with credits in all his subjects from the Provincial Secondary School, Katsina (now Government College Katsina) in 1968. He had the option of going for the Higher School Certificate course, which would lead to a University Degree program, or to go for a Diploma course. He chose the latter and was admitted into the College of Agriculture of the prestigious and the only University in Northern Nigeria at that time, the Ahmadu Bello University, where he obtained a Diploma in Agriculture in 1970.

Due to his quest for education, Prof. Lugga later enrolled at, again, the prestigious and the only Polytechnic in Northern Nigeria at that time, the Kaduna Polytechnic, where he obtained a National Diploma in Marketing with four distinctions and four credits in 1975. He continued with his studies at the Polytechnic from where he passed out with a Higher National Diploma in Marketing, with three distinctions and three credits in 1977. He also obtained a Diploma in Manufacturing from the Institute of Manufacturing, Warwickshire, England in 1980 and a Certificate in Management from Kabelmetal Electro Training, Hanover, Germany, in 1985.

Prof. Lugga’s desire for higher education led to his gaining admission to study for the Masters Degree in Business Administration (Executive Program) at the University of Ilorin in the 1998/99 Academic Session. He was also offered the opportunity to concurrently register, through the distance learning programme, to study for both the Master of Business Administration and the Doctor of Management degrees from St. Clements University, British West Indies. He chose to pursue the double degree program from St. Clements University, which is an accredited member of the British Association for Open Learning, London, and the World Association of Universities and Colleges, Washington DC. After the successful study, research and thesis presentation, he obtained the Master of Business Administration Degree in 2002 and the Doctorate Degree in Management in 2003 from St. Clements University. About twelve years later, in 2015, he obtained a Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Conflict Management from San Juan University, Costa Rica, Central America, which is a University recognised by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).
